DIYers and professionals alike can use the Cutek® system to get superior results
and lasting protection and beauty. This system is user-friendly, making it
accessible for first-time deck finishers while still meeting the high standards of
seasoned professionals.
A well-finished deck not only enhances the beauty of your outdoor space but also
ensures longevity and durability. Follow this step-by-step guide to properly clean,
restore, and protect your deck using industry-best practices. Whether you’re
working with new hardwood, softwood, aged wood, or thermally modified wood,
this guide will help you achieve flawless results.
✅ Pearl of Wisdom: Many homeowners love the look of new wood,
especially Cedar, Hardwoods, and Thermally Modified varieties. They hold off on
protecting and sealing their expensive deck or siding, hoping the color will last
forever—only to be shocked a year or two later when the wood has silvered and
looks unrecognizable. The process of bringing it back is totally doable, but it’s
much more work than sealing and UV-protecting it properly from the start.
All wood will eventually crack and cup without moisture protection. All wood will
silver without UV protection. If that’s the look you want, Cutek® Colortone (especially Smokey Grey) makes it look much more polished and refined.
Step 1: Surface Preparation – Cleaning & Prepping the Wood
Before applying any wood treatment, it’s crucial to clean and prepare the
surface to ensure optimal absorption of protective oils.
For New Wood (Hardwoods & Softwoods)
New wood often has mill glaze—a smooth, hardened surface that prevents
penetration of oils and stains.
Option 1: Cutek® Reviver (Recommended)
Pre-wet the deck as you go, especially on sunny or hot days when water
may evaporate quickly before the product is spread evenly. Work
in sections.
Dilute Cutek® Reviver to 1/4 strength and apply evenly.
Use a roller and roller pan or soak thoroughly with a pump sprayer on the
widest setting to avoid streaking. Going across the grain with a roller can
help with even application.
Let stand for 10-30 minutes.
Optional: Lightly scrub with a brush or non-abrasive pad.
Rinse thoroughly using a pressure washer (2000 PSI recommended) with
a green fan tip or, even better, a surface cleaner attachment for uniform
results. Rinse until there is no more sudsing.
Option 2: Light Sanding (Alternative Method)
Sand the wood with 80-100 grit sandpaper to open the pores and remove
mill glaze.
Remove all dust and debris before proceeding to oil application.
For Aged, Weathered, or Grayed Wood, Including Thermally Modified Wood
If your deck or siding has grayed or accumulated heavy grime, use Cutek®
Reviver to restore its natural color.
Pre-wet the deck as you go, especially on sunny or hot days.
Use a roller and roller pan or soak thoroughly with a pump sprayer.
Apply Cutek® Reviver generously and evenly. Use half-strength for
moderate soiling or full strength for heavily stained or grimy wood.
For aged, weathered, or grayed wood, let stand for 1-24 hours.
Always perform a test patch before full application to determine the ideal
dwell time.
Scrub if needed to lift deep stains.
Rinse thoroughly using a pressure washer (2000 PSI recommended) with
a green fan tip or surface cleaner attachment.
✅ Pro Tip: If you have a very dirty deck or a large deck and are on well water,
divide this over several days to avoid running the well dry.
✅ Pro Tip: Ensure the wood is completely dry before moving to the next step.
The moisture content should be below 17%. If you don't have a moisture meter,
the wood should feel dry to the touch.
Step 2: Applying Cutek® Extreme Oil Wood Protection
Once the wood is clean and dry, it’s time to protect it with Cutek® penetrating oil.
Unlike traditional film-forming sealers, Cutek® deeply penetrates wood fibers to
provide lasting protection against moisture, UV damage, and weathering.
How to Apply Cutek® Oil
Use a 7-inch Cutek® Deck Brush for even application.
Apply in thin, even coats:
o Work in small sections (3-4 boards at a time).
o Allow 30-60 minutes for full penetration.
Wipe Off Excess Oil (If Necessary):
o If applied thinly and evenly, no wiping is needed.
o If excess remains after 30-60 minutes, remove with a dry cloth to
prevent a sticky finish.
✅ Pro Tip: Avoid applying oil during peak pollen season, heavy leaf fall, or
caterpillar infestations. Try to avoid times when things are dropping, like Spongey
Moth or similar caterpillars, heavy pollen, and maple helicopters in the spring, or leaves
and evergreen needles in the fall if your deck is in a wooded area.. These can get
trapped in the finish and cause extra work later.
Step 3: Drying & Curing – Letting the Oil Work
Dry Time: Allow 24-48 hours before light use. Hardwoods and thermally
modified woods take longer. Plan accordingly.
Warmer temperatures, sun exposure and wind accelerate drying and
curing.
Full Curing Time: Takes 7 to 14 days.
Precautions: Avoid heavy foot traffic and water exposure during this
period.
✅ Pro Tip: If it rains during the curing phase, the Colortone chalking agent may
cause temporary spotting. This can be sanded out, and the deck can be recoated
seamlessly. A light rain after a few hours of drying on a hot day will usually be
alright. Do not panic.
Step 4: Routine Maintenance & Reapplication
Annual Cleaning: Use Cutek® QuickClean (diluted 1/4-1/2 bottle to 1 gallon
of water).
Apply with a pump sprayer (see our Spring Clean-Up Guide).
Reapply Cutek® Extreme Oil every 1 to 3 years, depending on sun and
water exposure.
Use Cutek® Colortone for Refinishing for added UV protection and
to enhance wood grain.
